Where to give birth in Aneurin Bevan Health Board
So you might be starting to think about where you want to give birth - do you go for a midwife-led unit because you want a calming, less medicalised environment? Or do you choose a labour ward so that doctors are on hand if needed? What if there’s only one birth pool and it’s taken when you need it?
In this blog post I’ve summarised the places you can give birth within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and the benefits of each. Remember you CAN give birth outside of your local health board if you prefer the look/ approach of another setting!
I would also recommend calling the settings you’re considering and requesting a tour/visit so that you can get a good feel for the place and the staff. Feeling comfortable and familiar with the place you give birth is so important for a more positive experience.

The Grange University Hospital Obstetrics Unit
The Grange hospital has a Obstetrics unit, also known as a labour ward. If you choose an obstetric led unit but really want the relaxed setting of a birth unit, you can ask for the lights to be dimmed, fairy lights and LED candles, gentle music, a birthing ball and midwives are in full support of hypnobirthing techniques.
Some of the main differences are the way your baby is monitored in labour, access to an obstetric team of doctors and access to certain medications. Epidurals are available.
